Trump’s Plans with Gaza are Misleading Yet Strategic

On February 4, 2025, during a joint press conference with Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Trump stated, “The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site, level the site, and get rid of the destroyed buildings.” This statement proceeded to capture the attention and mass reactions of people around the globe. While President Trump has a reputation for delivering on bold statements, the feasibility of this promise has been called into question.

The U.S. has never been a stranger to military intervention in the Middle East and is currently playing a key role in brokering the Israel-Gaza ceasefire. However, the more the U.S. attempts to influence Middle East relations the more resistance they can expect to be met with. Longstanding regional tensions and historical conflicts make it highly unlikely that the U.S. could establish lasting control over Gaza. This threatening statement instead is being utilized to apply heavy pressures on neighboring states, hoping that disbursement of the Palestinian group in the region may naturally eradicate the previous conflict. Trump may be employing this as a strategic pressure tactic, but his delivery has left the global community in a state of panic, raising questions about the ethics of his approach.

One of the critical aspects that brings global attention to this perceived “threat” is the backing and support of Israel. The Israeli far-right, which strongly supports the destruction of Hamas, has expressed significant admiration for Trump and his plan. However, many Palestinians and Arab leaders in the region have condemned the plan, calling it a form of ethnic cleansing. Multiple Palestinians have made a point to state that, even under the promise of a better future, they refuse to leave their home and the graves of their loved ones. Lastly, as this statement was conducted during the fragile ceasefire agreement commencements, a high-ranking leader within Hamas has stated that they will never accept these conditions, and urged President Trump to redact the statement or the current agreement would be in danger of failing.

Alongside strengthening U.S.-Israel relations, President Trump is also seeking closer alignment with Saudi Arabia. The potential for these relations has resulted in Saudi Arabia failing to publicly distance themselves from the statements made by President Trump. While President Trump has not shown interest in developing Syrian relations, a deployment of 2,000 U.S. troops to keep the previous Islamic state out of power and help the Syrian military maintain control, is integral in not letting the state slip back to its previous regime under Assad.

However, 70% of the infrastructure of Gaza is currently in ruin. It can be expected that Palestinians will be forced to relocate despite any future plans for the region . Trump’s statement may have been a strategic move to pressure neighboring nations, such as Egypt and Jordan, into accepting responsibility for refugees displaced by the conflict. While these seemingly unfiltered statements inevitably cause mass confusion, it is important to look at the factors of the situation and underlying motives that may drive these types of actions.
