President Trump’s changes to the White House are a visual example of his presidency

On March 5th, 2025, President Trump announced a sweeping renovation of the East Wing of the White House, following up on his September plans. This redesign effort would be the most dramatic by a U.S. president since the 1950s, when President Harry Truman rebuilt the White House. At that time, the White House was in danger of collapse because of a fire in 1814 and added indoor plumbing and other modifications compromising its structure. Truman’s rebuilding project makes up what the White House looks like today and what Trump has already destroyed.

The most significant project with the White House renovation is the White House Ballroom. Planned to be 90,000 sq ft, Trump claimed that this ballroom will be “The Greatest of its kind ever built.” It is planned to match the White House in height and scale and is estimated to cost $400 million, all of which will be funded by wealthy individuals and corporations. In contrast to Trump’s enthusiasm, this project has seen massive public backlash due to the fact that Trump destroyed the East Wing in October last year in order to make room for the ballroom —something that he promised that he would not do.

The same day he announced the ballroom’s renovation, there was a hearing scheduled to green light construction plans. However, the decision has been pushed back to April 2nd because of the increasing outcry of the public and preservationists. The National Capital Planning Commission, who is in charge of approving this project, has received more than 35,000 written comments with the vast majority opposing construction. In December 2025, the National Trust for Historic Preservation sued Trump and other government officials to stop construction. The lawsuit alleges that federal officials are violating the Administrative Procedure Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and the separation of powers under the Constitution.

“No president is legally allowed to tear down portions of the White House without any review whatsoever-not President Trump, not President Biden, and not anyone else. And no president is legally allowed to construct a ballroom on public property without giving the public the opportunity to weigh in.” the lawsuit says.

Now, this action and his recent declaration of war on Iran only says one thing: President Trump is abusing his power as a president. He has made decisions without input from Congress and the Supreme Court and he has surrounded himself with many officials supporting his rash decisions for their own benefit. These decisions may benefit America in the long term, they may bring us great profits and benefits, but America has always operated with three powers keeping the others in check. No one has absolute power, that is how our Constitution was made. Trump is testing those limits and seeing how much he can get away with. And if he continues to get away with rash and self-satisfying decisions, there will come a day where his decisions will hurt the country in some way.
