The Era of Buyer’s Remorse

Since 2016, the incumbent political party has lost the Presidency. In fact, Barack Obama was the last President to win two consecutive elections. Before him, both George W. Bush and Bill Clinton were re-elected. From 1992 to 2016, each party held power for eight years, totaling 24 years of alternating leadership.

We have now entered a new era. Donald Trump won the Presidency in 2016 with a Republican trifecta but lost to Joe Biden in 2020. The Democrats then lost to Trump again in 2024, and current polling indicates that the GOP may struggle in the 2028 election.

What does this pattern of political oscillation mean for America? It suggests less stable governance, especially regarding foreign policy, where executive discretion plays a significant role. Additionally, it indicates that American voters are increasingly distrustful of both parties, leading them to switch between the two without being fully satisfied with either.
