Since the war with Iran began a few weeks ago, there have been three alleged terrorist attacks on American soil. In Virginia, a former National Guard member who had previously served prison time for attempting to aid the Islamic State opened fire in an ROTC classroom at Old Dominion University, killing Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, the class instructor. In Michigan, a man who reportedly lost family members in Israeli bombings in Lebanon attempted to shoot and blow up a synagogue outside of Detroit but was thankfully thwarted by increased security measures. And in New York, two teenagers threw improvised explosive devices at an anti-Islam protest in front of Mayor Mamdani’s residence, in what appeared to be an ISIS-inspired attack.
While we should never give in to terrorism, it is clear that the President’s decision to become involved in another Middle Eastern conflict is negatively impacting American safety. Iran is likely to mobilize any terrorist cells it has in the U.S. and may attempt to use them to cause a mass casualty event at home. Some experts suggest that this situation may actually benefit the Israeli and American administrations, as it could prey on American fears. There are even claims that some, including former President Trump, may want to use these attacks as grounds to cancel the midterm elections. While I won’t go that far, it is becoming increasingly evident that Americans are being put at risk both at home and abroad for unclear purposes.
