Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer simply a futuristic technology discussed by researchers and technology enthusiasts. It is now influencing corporate decisions, workforce planning, and, increasingly, people’s livelihoods. Oracle, the American multinational technology company, reduced its workforce by approximately 21,000 employees, or about 13%, during fiscal 2026 while simultaneously increasing its investment in AI infrastructure and data centers. The company is reportedly preparing for another round of job cuts as it continues its massive spending on AI.
Naturally, this raises an uncomfortable question: is AI going to close the doors to future employment?
The answer is more complicated than a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no.’
Recent data suggest that AI is simultaneously destroying some industries and creating new opportunities. PwC’s 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer, which analyzed more than one billion job advertisements across six continents, found that companies most exposed to AI are actually expanding their headcount faster than companies that are less exposed. Productivity growth was also 40% higher among the most AI-exposed companies. At the same time, AI is rapidly changing the skills employers expect, particularly increasing the importance of judgment, creativity, leadership, and other human-centered capabilities.
The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 similarly identifies AI and big data among the fastest-growing skill areas, while emphasizing that technological literacy, analytical thinking, and human capabilities will remain important. The report, based on the views of more than 1,000 employers, suggests that the future labor market will involve significant job transformation rather than simply the disappearance of work.
Therefore, the real danger may not be AI replacing every professional, but stagnant professionals being replaced by those who do know how to use AI.
For workers, the solution should not be to compete with AI by developing the skills that AI demonstrates. Instead, professionals should learn to combine this new technology with distinctly human abilities.
First, become AI-literate. Professionals do not necessarily need to become programmers. However, they should understand how AI tools work and improve productivity, how to write effective prompts, and where human verification remains essential.
Second, strengthen human skills. Critical thinking, communication, leadership, creativity, negotiation, empathy, and decision-making are becoming increasingly valuable because automation cannot entirely replace them.
Third, develop a specialized identity. Generic skills are more vulnerable to automation. Professionals should build expertise in a particular industry or subject and use AI as a productivity tool within that expertise.
Fourth, keep learning. A degree or job title can no longer guarantee long-term security. Continuous learning, certifications, portfolios, and practical projects can make professionals more adaptable when industries change.
Finally, workers should not view AI merely as a competitor. The emerging workplace may reward people who can direct, evaluate, and improve AI-generated work rather than those who avoid it.
AI will certainly eliminate some tasks and some jobs. But, history shows that technological revolutions also create new industries, occupations, and forms of work. Therefore, the bigger question is not whether AI will replace jobs, but who will be prepared to work alongside AI when the definition of a job itself changes.
The future may not belong to humans against AI. It may belong to humans who know how to use AI better than their competitors.
