In the late 1980s, after being placed on China’s ‘most wanted’ list for his pro-democracy stance against the communist government, Arthur Liu fled to the United States as a political refugee, finding the very freedom he had courageously defended. Nearly 35 years later, Liu’s daughter, Alysa Liu, was approached by China and asked to represent her father’s native country at the Winter Olympics. However, Alysa rejected the regime’s recruitment efforts, which had blacklisted her father, and instead chose to represent the country that embraced her father’s ideals, ultimately winning two gold medals in figure skating at the 2026 Winter Olympics for the U.S.A.
