SNL Breaks the Pattern

SNL recently aired a skit that mocked the race-swapping of Professor Snape in the new Harry Potter series. The skit highlighted how characters might be perceived as racist for their suspicions and hatred toward a Black Snape, pointing out the absurdity of this change. This moment marked a rare instance of sincerity from SNL, acknowledging the ridiculousness of Hollywood’s insistence on altering source material when adapting established works.

For the past decade, SNL has mostly made fun of fans who are justifiably upset by these unnecessary changes. It’s interesting to see this shift in perspective, especially as audiences have increasingly rejected content created for the so-called “modern audience.” Perhaps SNL has finally recognized that the customer is always right.

However, Hollywood often remains disconnected from reality, failing to consider the consequences of race-swapping characters and how it fundamentally changes the story. As Harry Potter fans continue to criticize the show, it will be fascinating to see how it performs upon release.
