Upset arose as viewers saw that Genesis 9:12-19, a biblical passage, had been added to the caps of several players. The reference reveres the rainbow as a symbol of God’s covenant with all living creatures, serving as a stark objection to modern day ‘ownership’ of the image as an affirmation of individuality. Unsurprisingly, the LGBTQ+ community took the dissent as a personal attack, expressing feelings of disappointment and betrayal. Sentiments toward Pride Month are no more homogenous than America itself, and liberalism has zealously impressed the importance of diversity, inclusion, and self-expression. Yet, the liberal movement was outraged when diversity of belief walked onto the field. Liberalism has long rejected conformity at the expense of social harmony, and has made great strides as a result. The historically outcast now has a voice, and a loud one at that. But instead of maintaining the values that paved their way to freedom, the modern liberal agenda only welcomes differences with which they are comfortable. At the heart of the Pride Night debate are players who invoked their right to disagree amid looming public uproar. Liberal pride declares the unapologetic self, yet the movement now demands apologies from those who differ from the group — exclusivity in its purest form. The Giants event is but a recent slip in the liberal mask of tolerance, revealing that liberalism refuses to give what it sought to receive.
