Why Are We Talking About Anything but the Gold?

As the Winter Olympics come to a close, there has been much discussion about Alysa Liu, who won two Olympic gold medals in women’s singles skating and contributed to the overall team gold. However, with all this recognition, questions about Liu’s personal life have arisen. A particularly contentious topic has been Liu’s sexuality, with some speculating that she is a lesbian. Why is this the focus of attention? Liu delivered an incredible performance and brought a significant victory to the U.S. team, yet many choose to examine her sexuality instead. Sexuality is a personal matter and does not define the entirety of who a person is. Why do we focus on such a narrow aspect of someone like her sexuality, rather than celebrating her achievements and gold medals?
