Jeff Hall is a newspaper guy going way back (Kansas City Star, Los Angeles Times, Brentwood News). Like many, he is concerned about how nasty and partisan everything has become. He started OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION in an attempt to get America talking again.

Kristi Noem has been fired. I for one won’t miss her. I think all the “act tough and be sure to share it on social media” stuff was WAY overdone. It was all theater. But real lives were impacted by all the cruelty. American citizens, exercising their right to protest, got shot and killed.Innocent Americans came to live in fear. Some of the deported ended up in horrible jails — or countries they didn’t come from. Even Trump — who has excellent political antennae when it comes to knowing which way the wind is blowing — knew it had all gone too far.  If the…

Whether you like him or loathe him, I think one has to admit Trump put on quite a show at the State of the Union.  Many heroes were recognized, the list of accomplishments was long and impressive. He asked Democrats to stand if they believed protecting Americans was more important than protecting illegal immigrants. I don’t understand why, but the Democrats chose to remain seated. Trump cleverly made the Dems seem, once again, out of touch.  They should have leapt to their feet.

The FCC is going after Colbert and The View, demanding equal time for  candidates not invited to be interviewed.  OK.  Let’s be sure the same is required of conservative media outlets regulated by the FCC.

The Bondi hearing was quite pathetic. Clearly, there’s a cover-up going on regarding Epstein. She repeatedly attempted to change the subject, but will this strategy really work in the long term with Republicans? I believe that all Americans are tired of the nonsense, and the Great Reckoning is coming soon. And we thought Watergate was bad.

It is sad to watch what is happening to America. Everyone is so angry. I think there is a silent majority of those who would prefer to see another way. If the extremes on each side could, for a moment, see their own contributions to our country’s dysfunction, that would be a start. You can’t solve a problem until you recognize it first. To my Republican friends, I say this: America is tired of the chaos, the brute force, the lies, the theatrics, the corruption, the cruelty and the ugliness. You have allowed yourselves to be taken over by the…

It’s always very risky making predictions in the early days after a military strike. America was gung-ho to go to war with Afghanistan and Iraq, but after years of bloodshed and trillions spent, we came home with little to brag about.  I think it’s going to be different with Venezuela.  Overnight, everything changes.  A tyrant is now gone.  Drug shipments to the U.S. will go down, as will Russian and Chinese influence in South America. The U.S. will rebuild Venezuela’s oil infrastructure, and, soon enough, more oil will be available to the U.S. and especially to the Europeans, who found themselves dependent on…

Everyone says they want the Epstein Files released.  We just got a big dump of documents, many of which were heavily redacted. One document — 119 pages of grand jury testimony — was completely redacted. Photos that used to be on the DOJ website disappeared, and a photo of Bill Clinton and Michael Jackson with young people — whose faces were blurred out, as if to protect victims — just appeared. But the photo was taken from another public event and the photo has been in circulation for decades. This is so bush league.  People are sick of all the delays and what…

For five years now, a team of dedicated student interns, gently guided by some inspiring mentors, have been building OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION, or ONC for short. Over 1,000 students have participated so far. Our goal is to reduce partisanship and get America talking again.  Our focus is on common-sense solutions, not finger-pointing. Our motto: “Less hate, more debate.” We see spirit of our motto play out all the time in our articles, interviews, podcasts and more.  Republicans, Democrats, Independents — all are welcome at ONC.  We never yell at one another; we discuss things calmly and try to move things…

The attack on the three nuclear facilities in Iran is generating a lot of turmoil and angst. But what’s worse?  Dealing with this situation in a forceful way — as Trump has done — or hanging around for the next 20-30 years wondering what Iran will do, what Israel will do, what Hamas and Hezbollah will do, etc.? Iran and Israel were never going to end their conflict on their own; at least now Trump has ripped off the Band-Aid, and we can see what happens next.  Israel’s taking out Iran’s air defenses created a rare opportunity to do something…
