Near the end of its term, the Supreme Court ruled this week in NRSC v FEC that political parties are not restricted in how much they can spend in political coordination with their candidates. The Democratic Party referred to this ruling as “an invitation for corruption” in an official statement, lauding how much more their candidates earn from individual donors. At face value, this is in line with the party’s opposition to Citizens United, which broke limits on PAC spending almost two decades ago. However, if Democrats really hate Super PACs, they should love the political implications of this ruling. …

On Tuesday, June 23, the U.S. Senate passed a War Powers Resolution that could limit President Trump in Iran. The resolution passed with the help of 4 Republicans voting with Democrats. Among these 4 were 2 Senators who also voted against Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act in 2025: Susan Collins (R-ME) and Dr. Rand Paul (R-KY). Thus, Collins and Paul are the only 2 Republicans to vote against the defining features of Trump’s foreign and domestic agendas. In an era where loyalty is key in the Republican Party, this is significant. Collins’ political motivations are easy to infer. She…
When trying to assess President Donald Trump’s foreign policy, I have spent the past decade trying not to overthink anything. His first term seemed like it was the blend of isolationism in foreign policy, protectionism in foreign trade, and nativism in our cultural attitudes that has defined American populist and nationalist movements since the Know-Nothings. In Syria in Afghanistan, he was isolationist, setting in motion two withdrawals that led to a resurgence of ISIS and the Taliban respectively. In China, he was a protectionist, starting a trade war and implementing historic tariffs. At home, he was a nativist, implementing a…
As of June 9th, Graham Platner is officially the Democratic nominee for Senate in Maine. He won his primary election comfortably against Janet Mills, who had dropped out on May 30th. Platner ran on a hard-line progressive agenda, garnering endorsements from the likes of Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Ro Khanna. Left-wing populists in America like him. They like him so much that they are willing to shrug off numerous incidents of misogyny, infidelity, and allegations of volatility towards past girlfriends. Reports of infidelity came from The Wall Street Journal the very day that Janet Mills dropped out, and accusations…
As we get further in time from the domestic terror attack of January 6th, 2021, Mike Pence’s criticisms of his former boss become more harsh. In his new book, “What Conservatives Believe”, he refutes the new American right, calling Trump’s populism “progressivism in disguise.” This conclusion is correct. A former Democrat, Trump is still the same man he was when he was putting thousands of dollars into the pockets of Chuck Schumer. He has always been more akin to William Jennings Bryan than Ronald Reagan — the latter of which was an enthusiast of amnesty and international free trade whose…
On May 26th, incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) lost re-election to challenger Ken Paxton in a runoff of March’s Texas primaries. This news delighted nobody more than James Talarico, the Democratic nominee for Cornyn’s seat. Paxton is a scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General who, in 2023, was impeached on 20 articles by a Republican-controlled Texas State House . Though his approval ratings have since recovered to his pre-impeachment levels, which are still quite low (his current approval is a mere 34%), he has an unshakable reputation of corruption. Paxton is a political liability, and Talarico, a Democrat trying to win in…
The most recent round of primary elections on May 19th presented a disappointing reality for opponents of the President. Donald Trump, despite falling approval ratings, once again proved the power of his endorsement within the bounds of his own party. Thomas Massie (R-KY), an incumbent Congressman, lost his re-election bid to a Trump-backed challenger, Ed Gallrein. Other candidates endorsed by Trump either won their primaries, like Andy Barr (R-KY), or advanced to runoffs, like Barry Moore (R-AL) and Burt Jones (R-GA). Gallrein’s victory over Massie was perhaps the most telling of these races because it illustrates not only an example of…
