While many Americans protest immigration controls, locals in Ceuta are actively demanding them. Dozens recently gathered outside the Moroccan embassy in Madrid to protest mass migration after 60,000 young men breached the border in one day. In response, Italy has prioritized national security by suspending Schengen rules with Spain and coordinating border controls with France. Italian officials blamed Spain’s socialist Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, arguing that his relaxed immigration policies incentivized trafficking, causing the breach. As U.S. elections approach, American voters should look abroad. Many American border policies currently being proposed by DSA candidates have already been tested elsewhere—with highly problematic results.
