Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother, is on trial for the alleged killing of her three children in January 2023: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 8-month-old Callan. Clancy reportedly strangled all three children with an exercise band in the basement of her home before attempting suicide, leaving her paralyzed and wheelchair-bound.
On the day of the killings, Lindsay’s now ex-husband, Patrick Clancy, left home to pick up takeout food and medication for one of his children, saying, “I’ll be right back.” When he returned, he found his wife paralyzed in the backyard after cutting her neck and wrists and then jumping from a second-story window, with his three children strangled in the basement.
Ambulances took the three children to the hospital where Cora and Dawson were ruled dead; however, Callan was able to regain his pulse but not his brain activity. He was placed on life support for several days before dying.
Clancy kept journals that described her mental struggles, including thoughts of suicide and feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from her children and husband. She had told her husband before the killings that she was having “intrusive thoughts” and repeatedly sought help from her family and the system.
In December 2022, Clancy sought help for her postpartum depression, and later checked herself into a psychiatric hospital. Three months before the killings, clinicians prescribed a range of antidepressants, sleep aids, and other medications. During that time, Clancy reported increasing bouts of insomnia, anxiety, despair, and confusion about reality. She informed a psychiatrist that she heard a “man’s voice” in her head telling her to “kill the children so you can kill yourself.” Nineteen days later, she carried out the killings after being discharged.
Forensic toxicology reports revealed a variety of medications found in Clancy’s blood, including mirtazapine, lamotrigine, trazodone and quetiapine; drugs used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorders.
The family’s nanny, Elaine Rossi, testified that she did not have concerns about Clancy’s ability to care for her children, stating, “I observed a wonderful mom who loved her kids.”
Clancy has pleaded not guilty, arguing that she suffered from postpartum psychosis and should not be held criminally responsible for the killings. Prosecutors have argued that she planned to kill her children and mapped out the route for her former husband to take so she could have enough time. The prosecution is portraying Clancy as manipulative and calculating. However, some have suggested that since Lindsay was in psychosis and had repeatedly sought help, she should not be tried for her crimes.
Meanwhile, other conspiracy theorists online have hypothesized that Lindsey was not the true culprit; rather, it was her husband, Patrick Clancy, who actually killed the children. Many are suggesting that Patrick was having an affair at the time, and that more of his DNA was on the exercise bands than Lindsey’s. As Patrick has remarried and is likely to make millions off lawsuits related to this case, many theorized that Patrick framed his ex-wife and have begun to doubt the narrative being presented in the court findings.
On the opposition, others state that there is no question that Lindsey murdered her children, and that those trying to defend her actions or shift the blame are in the wrong. Many are asserting that her actions are inexcusable and that she needs to be given help, but also be held accountable and receive jail time.
